Common Threads Quilt Shop, Garfield MN

Welcome to Common Threads Quilt Shop! In the small town of Garfield, Minnesota, it’s not hard to miss the big log building on the only corner with a stop sign. Don’t let that fool you though because we’re not “in the middle of nowhere”. Only 6 miles from Alexandria, Garfield is nestled quaintly in the central lakes area of Minnesota.

Common Threads Quilt Shop was established in 1996 by Ruth Gess. The location was a quaint building off Broadway in Alexandria, MN. Ruth retired in 2005 and sold the shop to Julie Satterlie. Julie along with Holly Theonnes (her daughter) own and operate the shop now located in Garfield, MN. The rest of our Common Threads family includes Leslie Hoelscher, Kaye Zebarth, Bonnie Strand, Linda Droppo, Linda Slack, Linda Dynan, Paula Glade, and Katie Satterlie.

Our shop was was moved to Garfield in 2007 so that we could expand. We chose Garfield because it’s quiet and inviting. We now occupy the building that previously housed a lumber yard show room. Walking in, the first thing you see is the big stone fireplace. We have samples displayed around the store and hanging from the walls. Our fabrics are showcased in sections of the store separated by batiks, baby/children, Civil War, and 30’s. We also have a large color wall full of different designers, styles, and textures to help our customers see how different lines can be used together to create a unique project.

In 2012 one of our quilt machines was sold to Leslie Hoelscher who now does her own quilting from home. Holly Thoennes is our on-site quilter using a Statler for computerized quilting.

We like to stay active in our community. It is our pleasure to sponsor quilts for each Habitat for Humanity home that is built in our area. We donate fabric and machine quilting for our local Quilts of Valor chapters. Throughout the year we collect canned goods and donations for the local food shelf. We designate a portion of our proceeds to the Relay for Life (American Cancer Society). We also have a Common Threads Cookbook full of recipes submitted by our customers and employees from which all proceeds are given to the Leukemia Foundation.
